Fire breaks out at Bulgarian arms-depot, suspected Russian operatives involved.

A significant fire erupted in the storage area of the EMCO Gebrev Arms facility in Karnobat in June 2023, which manufactures ammunition and components for both civilian and military supply chains in Bulgaria. The blaze, which hit a munitions-storage room, was described by company executives as a “second recent suspicious incident” after a previous fire and explosion in July 2022. According to the published report, although Bulgarian authorities have not publicly, formally attributed the cause to Russian agents, the arms-dealer Emilian Gebrev said he is “100 per cent sure” that Russian operatives were behind the attacks. The geography of the incident is Bulgaria’s eastern flank, reflecting how defence-industry facilities—even well inland—are at risk of hybrid-threat operations. The dynamics illustrate key features of a hybrid‐warfare model: covert insertion or preparation, repeated attacks (pattern recognition), use of industrial defence assets as targets, ambiguity of attribution allowing deniability, and the purpose of degrading allied logistical or manufacturing capacity behind the front lines.
