Two Kalibr-armed corvettes, Sovetsk and Odintsovo, deployed to Lake Ladoga.
In September 2023, the Karakurt-class corvette Sovetsk and the Buyan-M-class corvette Odintsovo were observed on Lake Ladoga on what Russia called “experimental combat duty”, according to an analysis by the German Institute for International and Security Affairs (SWP). The ships moored at Lakhdenpokhya, a naval base abandoned in 2004, on the north-western shore of the lake about 40 km from Finland. Both classes carry eight-cell launchers for Kalibr cruise missiles with ranges of up to 2,500 km. SWP assessed that Lake Ladoga, enclosed by Russian territory, offers a protected launch area against NATO’s north-eastern members after Finland’s accession.
