NATO fighters intercept Russian Il-20 reconnaissance aircraft flying from mainland Russia toward Kaliningrad.
On 21 September 2026, NATO Baltic Air Policing fighters were scrambled to identify and escort an Il-20 reconnaissance aircraft flying from mainland Russia toward Kaliningrad Oblast. The aircraft remained in international airspace but operated without a filed flight plan and with its onboard transponder switched off. Its crew nevertheless maintained radio communication with the regional air-traffic-control centre. The source does not report dangerous manoeuvres, weapons employment or penetration of Lithuanian, Latvian or Estonian territorial airspace. The incident should therefore be recorded as a Russian military reconnaissance-aircraft interception rather than an Airspace violation – Aircrafts event.
