Forest clearing for a new railway-troops barracks observed in Petrozavodsk.
On 11 July 2026, Yle reported that satellite imagery of 5 July 2026 showed a newly cleared area about one kilometre long and 400 metres wide in Petrozavodsk, between the Kukkovka and Klyuchevaya districts near the former Onega tractor plant; the area was still forested in June 2026. The Petrozavodsk city council had approved the deforestation. Yle linked the site to previously announced Russian plans to build barracks for railway troops in Petrozavodsk in 2026. Railway troops build, maintain and repair rail lines for military logistics. According to Yle, the unit was formally established in December 2024 but had only a small number of recruits; the planned barracks would accommodate 2,500–3,000 personnel. Marko Eklund assessed that, given the scale, timing and location, the clearing was very likely for this purpose.
