Polish aircraft intercept Russian Il-20 reconnaissance aircraft over the Baltic Sea.

Poland said its air force intercepted a Russian Il-20 reconnaissance aircraft over international waters in the Baltic Sea on 13 May. The Polish army stated that the aircraft was flying without a filed flight plan and with its transponders turned off. It also clarified that there was no violation of Polish airspace, so this should not be coded as a direct sovereign airspace breach. Polish Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz said flights without transponders could pose a threat to other aircraft and that Polish pilots would respond immediately. He described the flight as another aggressive action by the Russian Federation and a test of Poland’s air-defence systems. The Il-20 platform is relevant because it is used for reconnaissance, so the incident likely had an intelligence-gathering dimension rather than being ordinary transit. The Baltic Sea has become a repeated theatre for Russian air-proximity operations around NATO’s eastern flank. This case is therefore important even without a formal airspace violation, because it required NATO-state military response and signalled Russian willingness to operate under unsafe conditions near alliance airspace. The same day, Poland had also activated aviation and air-defence measures as a preventive step during Russian strikes on Ukraine.
