Satellite imagery shows Russia reactivating the abandoned Soviet-era Rybka garrison in Petrozavodsk for the new 44th Army Corps.
On 31 January 2026, the Finnish public broadcaster Yle published a comparison of commercial satellite images showing that Russia had begun to reactivate the long-abandoned Soviet-era garrison in the Rybka district of Petrozavodsk. A baseline image of 17 June 2024 showed an overgrown site; an image of 27 April 2025 showed vegetation being cleared; and an image of 18 October 2025 showed more than 50 military vehicles parked in the area. According to Yle, the construction of new barracks at the site was planned to begin in 2026.
