Assemblée nationale website in France hit by pro-Russian DDoS attack.
On 27 March 2023 the official website of the French National Assembly (Assemblée nationale) was taken offline for several hours after a denial-of-service (DDoS) attack was claimed by the pro-Russian hacking collective NoName057(16). The attackers posted on their Telegram channel that the action was in protest of France’s policy on the war in Ukraine and in support of anti-pension-reform demonstrations. The site displayed a “currently under maintenance” message, reportedly beginning in the morning, and access had been restored by around 17:00 local time. The incident spans France’s national legislative infrastructure rather than a military base or frontline territory — showing that hybrid-warfare tactics can target political and institutional centres. The dynamics reflect a hybrid-warfare pattern where adversaries use non-kinetic methods (cyber disruption) to generate uncertainty, impose cost, and signal capability without resorting to bombs or bombs. For France, this incident underscores that state institutions and their websites are part of the vulnerability landscape, not just military assets or border defences. The attack prompted the French cybersecurity agency to examine legislative and governmental infrastructure resilience and prompted public discussion of how such DDoS events fit into the broader context of hybrid threats.
