Previously abandoned Severomorsk-2 airfield on the Kola Peninsula reactivated with new helicopter parking areas.
A satellite image of 6 April 2025 showed multiple helicopter parking areas in use at Severomorsk-2, an airfield that had been inactive for years, SVT reported on 10 May 2025. The base lies about 110 km from the Norwegian and about 180 km from the Finnish border. Open-source analysis published in May 2025 noted that the airfield was believed to have closed in 1998, that its runway was being refurbished, and that the Northern Fleet command had announced in 2022 a full modernisation of the base by 2030. The reactivation is carried out by the Russian Northern Fleet; it has not been officially characterised by Norwegian, Finnish or NATO authorities as a hostile act.
