Russian Geran-2 drone strikes an apartment building in Galați, Romania, injuring two civilians.

A Russian drone that was part of an attack against Ukraine entered Romanian airspace and crashed onto the roof of a residential building in Galați, causing a fire and injuring two people. AP reported that Romania’s Defence Ministry tracked the drone by radar before it struck the building, while Romanian forces scrambled two F-16 fighter jets and a helicopter but did not engage the drone over the populated area. Romanian President Nicușor Dan identified the drone as a Russian Geran-2 and said investigators assessed that it probably carried at least 30 kilograms of explosives. This was especially serious because it was the first Romanian drone-related spillover incident since 2022 to cause civilian injuries. The European Union condemned the incident as a grave violation of EU airspace by Russia and stated that the drone was carrying explosives and was part of Russia’s overnight attack against Ukraine. Romania also asked NATO to accelerate delivery of anti-drone capabilities and declared the Russian consul in Constanța persona non grata. This is one of the strongest second-half May 2026 cases because it involves confirmed physical impact inside an EU and NATO member state. It should not be softened into a generic “near-border incident”: the drone entered Romanian airspace, struck a civilian building, and caused injuries.
