Russian Il-20M reconnaissance aircraft enters Finnish airspace over the Gulf of Finland.
On 20 August, a Russian Il-20 reconnaissance aircraft entered Finnish airspace south of the island of Utö in the western Gulf of Finland. According to the Finnish Border Guard, the aircraft remained inside Finnish airspace for approximately three minutes. At its deepest point, it penetrated about 4.7 nautical miles (8.7 km) into Finnish territory. The aircraft was subsequently identified as a Russian Il-20M reconnaissance aircraft. Finland’s Ministry of Defence immediately treated the incident as a suspected territorial violation. The Finnish Border Guard opened an investigation into the incident. Finland’s Foreign Ministry also summoned the Russian ambassador to demand an explanation. This was the third suspected Russian airspace violation involving Finnish territory in 2026. The incident is particularly significant because the Il-20 is designed for electronic and signals intelligence collection. It therefore combines a physical airspace violation with a potential reconnaissance/EW objective.
