Poland downs drones after airspace incursion during Russian attack on Ukraine.

In the early morning hours of 10 September, during a large-scale Russian missile and drone attack on Ukraine, Polish air-defence forces engaged and shot down multiple unmanned aerial vehicles that had penetrated Polish airspace. According to Prime Minister Donald Tusk and military sources, roughly 15–20 Russian-origin drones entered Poland’s airspace across multiple points, some as far as Warsaw’s air-corridor and others near the eastern border. Poland’s military declared the event “unprecedented,” marking the first time a NATO member state had engaged Russian drones over its own territory. The incident triggered closures of major airports, mobilised allied aircraft, and provoked diplomatic demands for explanation from Moscow. From a geographical viewpoint, the incursion emphasises Poland’s eastern flank vulnerability. The dynamics reflect hybrid warfare’s escalation: unmanned systems used to probe NATO defences, create alarm among civilian populations, and force allied states into defensive posture rather than purely reactive diplomacy.
