Russian Su-35S fighters are used in operational air missions near NATO air patrols over the Barents Sea.

Norway`s armed forces reported that their F-35 fighters on NATO duty intercepted and monitored a Russian air formation over the Barents Sea that included two Tu-95 Bear strategic bombers escorted by Su-35S Flanker-M fighters. Norwegian Defence said the aircraft were tracked in international airspace and did not enter Norwegian sovereign airspace but were monitored as part of routine air policing and airspace control measures. NATO’s Baltic and Arctic air patrol units maintained safe escort distances while gathering radar and electronic signatures as part of heightened vigilance near allied air routes. Russian sources and aviation-oriented commentators noted that the use of Su-35S aircraft – usually associated with demonstration flying displays – in tactical missions indicates that Russia is employing front-line fighter assets more intensively in operational sorties. Analysts also suggested that sustained combat use of Su-35S jets, including those associated with elite units or display teams, may be worsening aircraft wear and depleting reserves faster than planned, which could have hybrid-warfare implications for readiness and allocation. The deployment near the Barents Sea comes amid Russia’s broader pattern of airspace interactions with NATO air policing missions, where intercepts, identification flights and shadowing manoeuvres have become a recurring feature of allied northern airspace monitoring since 2022. Norwegian defence officials emphasised that, although the activity remained within international airspace, such encounters heighten alert levels and underscore the need for robust allied air-defence and surveillance capabilities in the Arctic region.
