Deutsche Bahn signalling cables severed in Essen-Dellwig, disrupting freight rail traffic in western Germany.

On 11 December 2022, unidentified perpetrators deliberately damaged railway signalling infrastructure belonging to Germany’s national railway operator Deutsche Bahn in the Dellwig district of Essen, North Rhine-Westphalia. According to Deutsche Bahn representatives, the individuals entered a railway signalling facility and severed several cables inside electrical control cabinets, disrupting infrastructure used to manage freight railway operations. Contemporary reporting indicated that cables were damaged in two signalling installations, although the precise locations and circumstances of each individual act were not publicly identified. The affected railway section was used exclusively by freight trains, and no passenger services were directly disrupted. Following the discovery of the damage, Deutsche Bahn temporarily closed the line for several hours while technical personnel assessed the affected equipment and carried out repairs.
