Sabotage of railway infrastructure in Latvia.
In the end of August 2025, as reported by VDD, two individuals acting on behalf of Russian interests carried out a coordinated arson attack in Latvia, targeting a locomotive and several railway relay cabinets essential for signaling and movement control. Beyond the physical destruction of critical infrastructure, the perpetrators filmed the sabotage to provide proof of performance to their handlers. This footage was subsequently weaponized by Russian propaganda outlets, which edited and circulated the media with the false claim that the fires had occurred within Ukraine to simulate internal instability. Following an investigation that began in late August, both suspects were detained by September and officially handed over for prosecution on March 2, 2026, on charges of intentional property destruction and providing assistance to a foreign state.
