Aerial drone enters Romanian airspace and crashes near Grindu, Tulcea County.
During the night of 19–20 August 2026, Romanian military radar detected a group of aerial targets near the Ukrainian border at approximately 02:23. Two Spanish F-18 fighters were scrambled to monitor the situation, while a Romanian IAR-330 SOCAT helicopter conducted aerial reconnaissance. A drone subsequently entered Romanian airspace approximately 13 kilometres east of Galați. At 03:24, the helicopter crew reported that it had crashed in an uninhabited area approximately four kilometres northeast of Grindu, Tulcea County. The drone caught fire after impact, but the fire extinguished itself, and no casualties or damage to surrounding property were reported. Authorities dispatched personnel to secure the site, and the all-clear was issued at 03:52. Border Police collected the debris, and the Prosecutor’s Office attached to the Constanța Court of Appeal took over the investigation.
