Fragments of a Russian-type drone found near Moldova–Ukraine border.

Moldovan police announced that fragments of an unmanned aerial vehicle, believed to be a Russian-type “Shahed” drone, were found in a field near the village of Etulia close to the Ukraine border. According to the report, the fragments were discovered in rubble lying several piles of wreckage with metal and electronic parts. The area was cordoned off by Moldovan border-police for investigation and safety reasons. Moldovan President Maia Sandu stated on social media that “Russia’s war on Ukraine hits close to home in Moldova — again.” The incident evidences how the conflict in Ukraine spills across into Moldovan territory even though Moldova is not a combatant. Geographically, the event underscores Moldova’s vulnerability along its southern and eastern border zones adjacent to Ukraine, rather than only its interior. The dynamics illustrate hybrid-warfare logic: the use of drone incursions to test or increase allied states’ security burdens, force defensive posture, and create ambiguity of attribution. The incident adds to a pattern of smaller states in the region becoming affected by Russian-style hybrid operations: not direct invasions, but incursions and disruptions that escalate cost, awareness and vulnerability.
