Joint Nordic–Baltic investigation documents new military housing and vehicle concentrations at Pechenga.
On 10 June 2026, the public broadcasters SVT (Sweden), NRK (Norway) and DR (Denmark), together with Estonia’s Delfi, published a joint investigation based on Planet Labs satellite imagery and NASA night-time light data, mapping Russian military construction along the border with the Nordic and Baltic states. SVT listed Pechenga, about 10 km from the Norwegian border, as a site with construction of military housing and an accumulation of vehicles. Reporting on the investigation (Meduza, European Pravda) stated that the Pechenga garrison could grow from about 7,000 to about 17,000 personnel, and that the imagery also showed ammunition depots and expanded perimeters. Norway’s Chief of Defence, Gen. Eirik Kristoffersen, stated that the military threat to Norway would increase if the announced force levels materialised. Russia’s Foreign Ministry described the build-up as defensive.
