Suspected sabotage of the water supply system at Cologne-Wahn military air base, Germany.

On 14 August 2024, German military personnel detected a security breach near the drinking-water facility at Cologne-Wahn Air Force Barracks, adjacent to Cologne/Bonn Airport. A technical alarm triggered an inspection, during which personnel observed an unidentified individual leaving the vicinity of the pumping facility and discovered damage to the perimeter fence. Unusual preliminary water-test readings raised concerns about possible deliberate contamination, prompting authorities to temporarily seal the base, suspend its drinking-water supply and provide alternative water supplies. Police, military counterintelligence and state-security investigators examined the suspected intrusion. The facility accommodates approximately 4,300 military personnel and 1,200 civilian employees and supports government aviation operations. Subsequent laboratory testing found no violations of German drinking-water safety limits, and normal water use resumed. The circumstances raised suspicions of sabotage, but investigators did not establish contamination, the perpetrator’s identity or Russian involvement.
