NATO intercepts Russian Il-20 reconnaissance aircraft flying without transponder or flight plan.

On 7 August, NATO Baltic Air Policing fighters were scrambled after detecting a Russian Il-20 reconnaissance aircraft flying from Kaliningrad toward mainland Russia. The aircraft was operating without its onboard transponder activated. It had also not submitted a flight plan. Unlike several other Russian aircraft recorded that week, the Il-20 crew was maintaining radio communication with regional air traffic control. NATO aircraft nevertheless intercepted and identified the aircraft. The Il-20 is an intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance platform, making the incident particularly relevant from an intelligence-collection perspective. The aircraft remained in international airspace. The incident was officially recorded by Lithuania as an international flight-regulation violation. Its reconnaissance role makes it more significant for your tracker than a routine Russian military transit.
