Fire in the cable tunnel in Duesburg caused significant disruptions.

On July 31, 2025, a fire broke out in a cable tunnel between Düsseldorf and Duisburg. This caused a major disruption in regional and long-distance railway services. German police opened an investigation into an alleged act of sabotage after it was established that an ignition device was placed in the tunnel, causing damage to about 60 meters of cable. This event is one of many acts of suspected sabotage and hybrid warfare incidents in Germany, and although this particular instance was not directly attributed to Russia, it clearly fits the pattern that is increasingly being confirmed by the German authorities as being perpetrated by Russian secret services, especially after publicly acknowledging Russia’s role in a failed Leipzig explosive device incident.
