Polish fighters intercept Russian Il-20 reconnaissance aircraft approximately 30 km north of Łeba.

On 31 August, Polish fighter aircraft were scrambled to intercept a Russian Il-20 electronic-intelligence/reconnaissance aircraft operating over the Baltic Sea. The aircraft was detected approximately 30 kilometres north of Łeba, on Poland’s Baltic coast. Polish Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz stated that Polish fighters intercepted and identified the Russian aircraft. The Il-20 was operating without an active transponder and without a registered flight plan. Polish fighters escorted the aircraft while monitoring its movement. The Russian aircraft did not enter Polish territorial airspace. Polish authorities nevertheless described the activity as another test of Poland’s air-defence and deterrence capabilities. The aircraft’s electronic-intelligence mission makes the event particularly relevant to the surveillance dimension of Russian military activity around NATO’s eastern flank. The incident was also significant because Polish authorities said it was the fourth comparable Russian reconnaissance-aircraft incident since the end of July. It therefore represents a separate event from the earlier Polish interceptions we discussed in July.
