GPS disturbances affecting aircraft near eastern Finland and the Gulf of Finland.
In early March 2022 Finland’s Transport and Communications Agency (Traficom) reported that several aircraft flying near Finland’s eastern border and over the Gulf of Finland had experienced unusual GPS signal disturbances, including loss of positioning data and aborted landings. Finland noted that about ten aircraft reported anomalous navigation behaviour in the previous days, tying the onset to a meeting between Finland’s President and the U.S. President. The phenomenon occurred over areas where Russian-military radar and electronic-warfare systems are known to operate, though Finland did not publicly attribute the interference directly to Russia. The incident occured in Finland’s southeastern corridor and the Gulf of Finland where key air and sea approaches where navigational integrity is critical. The dynamic here fits use of non-kinetic electronic disruption to degrade civilian/military readiness and confidence rather than overt attack. The incident triggered Finland to issue a NOTAM (Notice to Airmen) warning and urged airlines to adopt backup navigation procedures. While no casualties or damage resulted, the event flagged Finland’s vulnerability to GNSS-linked disruption and spurred deeper consideration of electronic-navigation threats. The case remains a reference point in Finnish threat assessments of hybrid operations.
