Russian research vessel Akademik Boris Petrov enters Poland’s exclusive economic zone and disappears from public AIS tracking.

On 16 November 2025, the Russian-flagged oceanographic research vessel Akademik Boris Petrov entered Poland’s exclusive economic zone in the Baltic Sea, approximately 70 kilometres north of Darłowo. The vessel, officially used for oceanographic research, was reportedly travelling at approximately four knots when its position disappeared from publicly accessible AIS tracking at 18:43 local time. Its signal reappeared around 23:00, leaving several hours of movements unavailable through public vessel-tracking services. Poland’s Armed Forces Operational Command confirmed that military surveillance systems had continuously monitored the ship and that it posed no immediate threat. The vessel subsequently proceeded toward Russia’s Kaliningrad region. PISM included the incident in its analysis of suspicious Russian maritime activity in Poland’s exclusive economic zone, highlighting the potential dual-use capabilities of scientific research vessels. However, no evidence of underwater infrastructure damage, deliberate reconnaissance, or a specific hostile operation was publicly established.
