Russian GPS Spoofing Disrupts Aircraft Navigation in Eastern Finnmark, Norway.

In January 2025, aircraft operating in eastern Finnmark, northern Norway, experienced satellite navigation manipulation that caused onboard GPS systems to display incorrect geographical positions. According to the Norwegian Communications Authority (Nkom), the interference represented a change from earlier GPS jamming, which had primarily caused navigation receivers to lose satellite signals, toward spoofing capable of providing misleading positioning information. Aircraft crews reported unexpected navigation readings in areas where GPS reception had previously been disrupted by interference originating from Russia’s Kola Peninsula. Nkom investigated the reports using technical measurements and an analysis of aviation data, identifying falsified satellite navigation signals transmitted from Russian territory.
