Two commercial vessels struck by sea and aerial drones near Bulgarian coast.

On 6 October 2026, two commercial vessels were struck by drones in Bulgaria’s exclusive economic zone in the Black Sea, around 80 nautical miles (148 km) off the coast near Cape St. Atanas and the town of Byala. The Togo-flagged ALFA WATAN suffered critical structural damage and sank, while the Palau-flagged ABLE caught fire and its entire 18-member crew was evacuated by the Bulgarian ferry DIOSCURIA, with some sailors injured. At the time of the report, the fate of the ALFA WATAN crew was unknown. The incident prompted Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev to convene an emergency meeting with defence, interior, transport and security officials. The origin of the drones had not been established, although subsequent Bulgarian media reports cited sources claiming that the drones were Russian.
