Drone crosses into Estonian airspace in southeastern Estonia during large-scale drone activity near the Russian border.

In the early hours of 1 September 2026, Estonian air-surveillance authorities tracked approximately a dozen drones operating close to Estonia’s eastern border while Ukraine was conducting a large-scale drone attack against targets in western Russia, including the Ust-Luga port area. At approximately 03:00, one drone flying from the Russian side approached Narva, leading Estonia to activate ground-based air defence and scramble Turkish F-16s stationed at Ämari Air Base under NATO’s Baltic Air Policing mission; that aircraft turned back toward Russia without entering Estonian airspace. Roughly 30 minutes later, a separate drone crossed Estonia’s southeastern border and remained close to the border area, prompting a second public warning covering several southern counties. Estonia’s Foreign Ministry subsequently confirmed that drones moving parallel to the eastern border had entered Estonian airspace and that NATO fighters responded.
