Russian drone briefly violates Romanian airspace during attack on Ukrainian infrastructure near the Danube border.
A Russian drone briefly entered Romanian airspace during the night of 1–2 May while Russia was attacking Ukrainian civilian and infrastructure targets near the Romanian border. Romania’s Ministry of National Defence said its radar systems detected a group of around 20 Russian drones moving toward Izmail in Ukraine. Around 02:00, two Romanian F-16 fighter jets on air policing duty took off from the 86th Air Base in Fetești. Romanian authorities also issued an RO-Alert warning for the northern part of Tulcea County because of the threat near the border. The ministry stated that radar systems recorded a brief drone incursion into Romanian airspace in the Kiliia area before the drone continued toward Izmail. This makes the case a direct drone-related airspace violation against a NATO and EU member state. The incident did not become a direct attack on Romania, but it still created operational pressure on Romania’s air defence and civil-protection systems. It also shows how Russian attacks on Ukrainian Danube infrastructure repeatedly generate spillover risks for neighbouring NATO territory. Romania kept allied structures informed in real time, which confirms the alliance-level relevance of the case.
