Russian Banderol missile/loitering munition enters Moldovan airspace and crashes near Tălmaza.

On 17 August, a Russian S8000 Banderol loitering munition entered Moldovan airspace during a Russian attack on Ukraine’s Odesa region. Ukraine’s Air Force reported that the Russian weapon crossed into Moldova from the Odesa region. Moldova’s Defence Ministry subsequently reported that an unidentified aerial object had entered Moldovan airspace and exploded near Tălmaza. The explosion caused a fire in the surrounding area. The Moldovan authorities temporarily closed part of the country’s airspace while the incident was investigated. Moldova’s Foreign Ministry condemned the violation and summoned the Russian ambassador. The incident occurred approximately 20 km from the Ukrainian border. The weapon was subsequently identified by Ukrainian authorities as a Russian Banderol.
