Bulgarian Army arrests and neutralises drone carrying explosives that landed in Black Sea resort.

A special bomb-disposal unit of the Bulgarian Army was dispatched on 18 September 2023 to inspect a large unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) that had landed the previous evening on the rocky shore near Tyulenovo. The drone, estimated at about 3–3.5 metres in length according to witness reports, carried a container suspected to hold explosives. The coastal resort lies directly across the Black Sea from the Crimean Peninsula, a region deeply involved in the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, making the location both symbolically and strategically significant. Bulgarian Defence Minister Todor Tagarev stated publicly, “We can certainly assume that it is related to the war that Russia launched against Ukraine,” linking the event to Russian-style hybrid operations. Police cordoned off the area, restricted access to restaurant terraces and local boat moorings, and the bomb-disposal team destroyed the device in a controlled explosion after inspection determined it could not be safely moved. Investigation remained ongoing to determine the drone’s trajectory, origin and whether it had flown from over the sea or been carried in by currents. Witnesses described the drone as “an aircraft with standard ammunition” found by rocks next to moored boats. The Bulgarian government did not definitively attribute the drone to Russian forces, but the indication of explosives, the landing inside a NATO-state, and the proximity to the Crimean theatre pointed to a high-risk hybrid incursion. The incident highlights how the southern Bulgarian littoral—far from immediate front lines—can become a domain of hybrid threat events.
