Romanian village evacuated after a Russian drone strike across the Danube ignites a fuel tanker.

Romania ordered the precautionary evacuation of about 15 residents in Plauru after a nighttime Russian drone attack on Ukraine’s Reni port (just across the Danube River) struck a Turkish-flagged LPG tanker, causing a massive fire. Romanian air surveillance tracked the drones in flight but confirmed no violation of Romania’s own airspace, as the attack remained on the Ukrainian side of the river. Nonetheless, the burning gas ship – carrying highly flammable liquefied petroleum – posed an explosion risk to nearby areas. Sirens were activated and local emergency teams helped villagers (along with their animals) relocate further inland until the danger passed. The incident, though not a direct attack on NATO territory, triggered diplomatic protests and highlighted the spillover threat Russia’s war presents to bordering Allies. It followed several earlier cases of drone debris and stray munitions landing in NATO member states like Romania and Poland. In response, Romanian forces have bolstered air patrols along the Danube, and NATO announced steps to strengthen eastern flank air defenses (including an initiative dubbed “Eastern Sentry” to build a hardened anti-drone “wall” by 2027). This evacuation episode demonstrated how quickly a Russian strike near NATO’s border can escalate into an Allied civil emergency, blurring the line between Russia’s war on Ukraine and direct threats to Alliance territory.
