Suspected drone activity reported near Brunsbüttel critical infrastructure.
The first reported sighting occurred on 8 August near Brunsbüttel’s ChemCoast Park, an industrial area adjoining energy infrastructure, including an LNG terminal and a decommissioned nuclear power station. Further reports prompted a police operation and an investigation into suspected intelligence activity for sabotage purposes. However, an official update on 4 September substantially qualified the initial reporting: numerous suspicious observations were identified as aircraft, helicopters, satellites, lights or celestial objects. Police also identified some commercially available drones and their operators, while other observations remained unresolved. Russian involvement was suspected but never established in the investigation. On 19 May 2025, prosecutors confirmed that the case had been closed without identifying a perpetrator. The entry should therefore describe a series of suspected sightings, rather than a confirmed Russian reconnaissance operation or attack.
