NAVO-jachtvliegtuigen identificeren Russische Il-20 van Kaliningrad naar het Russische vasteland boven de Oostzee
Op 5 september 2026 werden jachtvliegtuigen van de NAVO Baltische luchtruimbewaking opgestegen om een Russisch verkenningsvliegtuig Il-20 te identificeren dat van de Russische oblast Kaliningrad richting het Russische vasteland vloog. Het Litouwse Ministerie van Nationale Defensie verklaart dat het vliegtuig gedurende de gemelde vlucht in het internationale luchtruim bleef. De Il-20 vloog zonder geactiveerde radartransponder en zonder ingediend vluchtplan, omstandigheden die de NAVO-jachtvliegtuigen ertoe brachten het vliegtuig te identificeren als onderdeel van de routinemissie voor Baltische luchtruimbewaking van de Alliantie. Het Russische vliegtuig onderhield niettemin radiocommunicatie met het regionale luchtverkeersleidingscentrum.

On 5 September 2026, NATO Baltic Air Policing fighters were scrambled to identify a Russian Il-20 reconnaissance aircraft travelling from Russia’s Kaliningrad Oblast toward mainland Russia. The Lithuanian Ministry of National Defence states that the aircraft remained in international airspace throughout the reported flight. The Il-20 was operating without an activated radar transponder and without a filed flight plan, conditions that prompted NATO fighters to identify the aircraft as part of the Alliance’s routine Baltic Air Policing mission. The Russian aircraft nevertheless maintained radio communications with the regional air-traffic control centre.
