According to NATO Allied Air Command, at around 17:30 UTC on 25 September five Russian military jets — specifically three MiG-31s, one Su-30 and one Su-35 — approached Latvian air-space from the Baltic Sea corridor without filing a flight plan and with transponders turned off. Hungarian Air Force JAS 39 Gripen fighters stationed under NATO’s Baltic Air Policing mission in Lithuania (Šiauliai) were scrambled to intercept the formation, visually identify the aircraft, and escort them away from Latvian-border air-space into international waters. Although the Russian jets did not cross into Latvian sovereign air-space, the proximity and composition of the formation triggered a heightened response due to the intersection of air-traffic corridors, NATO quick-reaction assets and Latvia’s air-defence coverage. The Baltic Sea corridor west of Latvia is a known approach route for Russian air-operations into the region, and is adjacent to the airway sectors monitored by Riga FIR, placing Latvia indirectly on the front line for allied air-defence. By flying a sizeable formation of advanced combat jets near allied air-space, the adversary forces Latvia and NATO to mobilise surveillance, scramble interceptors, review radar logs, and expend fuel and personnel hours—all without overt conflict or an air-space violation formal enough to trigger Article 5. Latvia’s defence minister later called on NATO to strengthen air-defence posture in the Baltics, citing this kind of routine but high-risk operation as part of the broader Russian pressure campaign in the region.
