NORAD detected and tracked two Russian Tu-142 “Bear-F” long-range reconnaissance and anti-submarine aircraft in the American and Canadian Air Defense Identification Zones near Alaska on 4 March 2026. The aircraft remained in international airspace and did not enter U.S. or Canadian sovereign airspace, so this should not be classified as a formal airspace violation. NORAD responded by scrambling a large package of U.S. and Canadian aircraft, including U.S. Air Force F-35s, F-22s, KC-135 tankers, an E-3 Sentry AWACS, Royal Canadian CF-18s, and a Canadian tanker to intercept, identify, and monitor the Russian planes. The aircraft entered an Air Defense Identification Zone, where aircraft are expected to be quickly identified for national security purposes. NORAD explicitly stated that such Russian activity in the Alaskan and Canadian ADIZ occurs regularly and was not viewed as a direct threat, which is important for accurate coding. At the same time, the operational profile matters: the Tu-142 is designed for long-range reconnaissance and anti-submarine missions, so flights of this type can support intelligence collection around Arctic and North American defence routes. The incident also occurred in a wider Arctic security context, where Russian and Chinese military activity has grown alongside expanding military and commercial activity in the region. Its significance lies in repeated Russian reconnaissance presence near NATO/NORAD air-defence zones, the scale of the allied interception response, and the pressure such activity places on readiness systems. It is also useful as a North American NATO-flank example, showing that Russian probing is not limited to Europe’s Baltic, Black Sea, or High North theatres.
