On 10 July 2026, NATO Baltic Air Policing fighters identified and escorted a Russian Su-30 fighter aircraft flying in international airspace from Kaliningrad toward mainland Russia. The aircraft was operating with its onboard transponder switched off. Its crew had not submitted a pre-filed flight plan and was not maintaining radio communication with the regional air traffic control centre. During the same episode, NATO aircraft also intercepted a Russian Tu-154 following the same route, although that aircraft was operating with its transponder switched on, had a pre-filed flight plan and maintained radio communication. The main concern in this incident was therefore the Su-30’s non-compliant flight profile, which triggered a NATO response in the Baltic region. Lithuania’s Defence Ministry described these responses as reactions to violations of international flight regulations. The aircraft were flying in international airspace, so this should be treated as a military aviation incident and flight-regulation violation rather than a confirmed violation of sovereign airspace.
