The open-source imagery analysis account AviVector published satellite images of Petrozavodsk airport dated 25 June 2026 and reported that construction of six hardened aircraft shelters had begun in the south-western part of the airfield in April 2026. Militarnyi, reporting on 28 June 2026, added that two Su-57 fighters had started regular training flights from the airfield around April 2026, and placed the work within Russia’s plan to build or reconstruct Arctic and north-western airfields through 2030. Petrozavodsk-Besovets is a joint civil-military airfield in Karelia, the region opposite Finland’s eastern border where Russia is expanding its ground forces (see entries on Rybka and Novaya Vilga). Hardened shelters increase the survivability of combat aircraft and make it harder to count aircraft from space.
