On the evening of 29 September 2025 employees at the Sleipner offshore gas field — run by Equinor — observed an unidentified drone flying over or near the facility and notified Norwegian police, who confirmed receipt of a report. Police said the drone had been detected, an investigation had been opened with intelligence services involved, and they were collecting data to determine type and origin. The Sleipner complex sits on Norway’s continental shelf in the North Sea, a critical energy‐infrastructure zone and part of the national and European energy export system. The dynamics reflect probing of critical infrastructure: by entering restricted airspace near a key energy node, the actor tests detection, response and possibly prepares target-data collection rather than immediate destruction. While no formal public attribution to the Russian Federation was made in this report, the event occurred amid heightened Russia‐Europe grey-zone tensions and follows other drone incidents in the Nordic region linked to Russian operations. The incident prompted Norwegian energy and security authorities to review airspace/asset protection around offshore platforms, increase unmanned‐aerial system (UAS) detection capability and integrate such air‐domain probing into resilience planning.
