On 21 May 2026, Militarnyi and UNITED24 Media reported, citing satellite imagery published by AviVector, that construction of four new protective hangars had begun at Chkalovsk naval air base in late April 2026. The structures were described as having an arched interior and square end walls, a design already used at other Russian airfields. The base hosts Baltic Fleet naval aviation, including Su-30SM multirole fighters and Su-24M bombers. The reporting noted that these hangars, built from relatively thin metal sheeting, offer only limited protection against fragmentation, but they conceal whether aircraft are present and thus complicate reconnaissance. The construction adds protected air infrastructure inside the Kaliningrad exclave, which is surrounded by NATO territory.
