On 29 December 2024, the oil tanker “Jazz” reported engine problems and slowed to 1.6 knots. After slowing down it began slowly drifting over nine underwater cables off the Finnish port of Hanko. One of the cables is the C-Lion 1 communication cable, which runs between Germany and Finland, and had previously been damaged by a Chinese merchant ship Yi Peng 3. Peter Viggo Jakobsen, representative of the Defense Academy, suggests that the tanker was trying to get the best position to look at the cables or do something about them. The incident continued the following days near Swedish island of Gotland and Denmark islands of Lolland and Bornholm.
