On the evening of 23 September 2026, Berlin Brandenburg Airport temporarily suspended flight operations after an unidentified drone was observed close to the airport’s northern runway. The UAV was detected at approximately 20:00 local time. German air-traffic control closed the affected airspace shortly afterwards, ultimately suspending airport operations for around 45 minutes. Several aircraft were diverted to Dresden while incoming and outgoing flights experienced delays. Airspace was reopened shortly after 21:00. German authorities did not establish the identity or operator of the drone in their initial investigation. The incident occurred only weeks after Germany formally attributed an attempted explosive-drone attack at Leipzig/Halle Airport to Russian actors. It also occurred amid a steep rise in unexplained drone activity around German aviation and military infrastructure: Berlin Brandenburg had already recorded 28 drone sightings during the first half of 2026, compared with eight during all of 2025. ISW assessed the Berlin incident alongside the Starlink sabotage in Poland as fitting Russia’s wider pattern of provocations directed against European logistical and critical infrastructure, while explicitly noting that German authorities had not attributed this individual drone to Russia. Accordingly, this should remain a low-confidence Fitting the pattern incident rather than a Russian-attributed attack.
