On the evening of 2 October 2025, police and airport authorities received multiple reports of unidentified drones operating around Munich Airport. The first observations were reported at approximately 20:30 in areas surrounding the airport, including Freising and Erding. At around 21:05, drones were reported close to the airport perimeter fence, and by approximately 22:10 at least one sighting had been made on the airport grounds themselves. Bavarian state police and the Federal Police deployed substantial forces, including helicopters, to search for the aircraft and their operator, but no pilot or launch location was identified. Airport authorities progressively suspended operations from 22:18, closing both runways at 22:35 as a safety precaution. By midnight, the disruption had resulted in 17 cancelled flights and 15 diversions to Stuttgart, Nuremberg, Vienna and Frankfurt, affecting almost 3,000 passengers; Munich Airport provided camp beds, blankets, food and drinks to stranded travellers.
