Russian fighter aircraft violate Swedish airspace east of the island of Gotland.

View this signal on the map

On 2 March 2022, four Russian military aircraft — two SU-27 fighters and two SU-24 attack aircraft — briefly violated Swedish airspace over maritime space east of Gotland. Swedish JAS 39 Gripen fighters were scrambled by the Swedish Air Force rapid-readiness unit, which documented and photographed the incident. The Swedish Armed Forces described the incident as “very serious” and called Russia’s conduct “unprofessional and irresponsible.” Gotland lies in the Baltic Sea, an area critical for Sweden’s national air and maritime defence, and serves as a strategic forward point for NATO’s Baltic flank. The dynamic of this incursion includes testing Sweden’s air-defence readiness, forcing rapid interceptor deployment, generating diplomatic cost and signalling Russia’s willingness to press air-space boundaries. No shots were fired or physical damage recorded, the rapid air-space violation increases reaction-time pressure on Sweden’s defence system.
