High-voltage transmission pylon sabotaged near Villeneuve-Loubet, causing widespread Cannes blackout.
On 24 May 2025, unidentified perpetrators deliberately damaged a high-voltage electricity pylon near Villeneuve-Loubet, southeastern France. Investigators established that three of the structure’s four supporting legs had been cut, compromising its stability and disrupting a major electricity transmission line supplying Cannes. The resulting power outage affected approximately 160,000 households across the western Alpes-Maritimes region for several hours. Traffic lights, railway operations, telecommunications and commercial services were disrupted, while the Cannes Film Festival switched to backup electricity supplies to continue its closing events. French prosecutors opened a criminal investigation into deliberate destruction of critical infrastructure. The attack occurred several hours after suspected arson at a substation in Tanneron, but investigators had not conclusively established common perpetrators or foreign-state involvement.
