Suspected arson attack on railway cables in Berlin-Moabit disrupts thousands of train services.

View this signal on the map

On 2 August 2024, a fire damaged approximately 30 railway communication cables containing around 1,000 individual conductors near Berlin’s Jungfernheide station. The damage disabled railway signals and switches, disrupting S-Bahn, regional, long-distance and freight services between central Berlin and Spandau. Investigators ruled out a technical cause and examined the possibility of deliberate arson. Deutsche Bahn reported that more than 2,300 trains and hundreds of thousands of passengers were affected during five days of disruption. Full regional and long-distance operations resumed on 7 August, although repairs to some S-Bahn infrastructure continued. Berlin police investigated a possible politically motivated attack and examined a purported far-left statement claiming responsibility. No evidence of Russian state involvement was publicly established.
