Russian Luch-2 satellite conducts proximity operations near Astra 4A.
On 1 April 2024, Russia’s Luch-2 satellite established a prolonged position near Astra 4A, a communications satellite operated by Luxembourg-based SES. The Russian spacecraft remained near the 4.75°E orbital slot until 22 June, conducting proximity operations around commercial satellite infrastructure. Commercial tracking data recorded approaches estimated at approximately 13–45 kilometres, depending on the monitoring source and measurement period. The manoeuvres followed reports of earlier interference with Astra 4A broadcasts, including Ukrainian television transmissions, although no causal connection between the interference and Luch-2 was established. European space-security analysts considered the prolonged orbital presence consistent with possible electronic reconnaissance and collection of satellite communications information. No disruption or unauthorised control of Astra 4A was confirmed.
