Suspected drone intrusion triggers Lithuania’s first red-level air raid alert in Vilnius.
On 20 May 2026, Lithuanian military radar detected a suspected unmanned aircraft approaching from the direction of Belarus and apparently entering Lithuanian airspace. Authorities activated NATO’s Baltic Air Policing mission and issued warnings across eastern Lithuania, including Vilnius County. The alert was escalated to the highest threat level, prompting residents to take shelter and government officials to move to protected locations. Vilnius Airport temporarily suspended operations, while some railway services were disrupted as a precaution. The red-level warning was lifted shortly before 11:00, although surveillance operations continued. Authorities subsequently searched for the suspected aircraft but did not recover wreckage. Unlike the drones found in Varėna and Utena districts, the object’s identity and origin could not be established.
