On 27 August 2026, the cargo vessel Progress IV (IMO 8358130), reported as Dominican-flagged, caught fire and sank in Romania’s exclusive economic zone in the Black Sea, approximately 15–20 nautical miles southeast of Sfântu Gheorghe. Romanian maritime authorities received an initial distress signal at 17:55 and launched a search-and-rescue operation involving Coast Guard vessels, specialised rescue ships and the nearby commercial vessel Mohamad B. All 12 crew members were rescued, including one sailor who sustained injuries, despite rough seas with waves reaching approximately 2.5 metres. Romanian President Nicușor Dan stated that the ship had been struck but emphasised that the responsible party and mechanism remained unknown. Romanian media subsequently investigated reports of a possible drone strike. Although the vessel’s destruction was confirmed, no evidence publicly established that it had been deliberately targeted by Russian forces.
