At the turn of July and August 2026, the cruiser Marshal Ustinov fired a Vulkan missile, the frigate Admiral Golovko a Kalibr cruise missile, a Bastion coastal battery on the Rybachy Peninsula an Oniks missile and the submarine Orel Granit missiles, the Russian Ministry of Defence stated. Norway’s Joint Headquarters said the drills took place only a few kilometres from the Norwegian border, in Russian and international waters and airspace. The Barents Observer estimated that the Oniks missile would have come down inside Norway’s Exclusive Economic Zone north of the Varanger Peninsula. The Norwegian spokesperson called the exercise “nothing new” and “normal Russian military activity”.
