On 14 August, a drone entered Latvian airspace and triggered a NATO air-policing response. Two Italian Eurofighter aircraft based at Šiauliai, Lithuania, were scrambled, while Turkish F-16s from Ämari, Estonia, also participated in the response. NATO aircraft intercepted the UAV and subsequently shot it down. The drone debris fell in eastern Latvia and was recovered by Latvian National Guard personnel. Latvian authorities launched an investigation to establish the drone’s origin and trajectory. NATO initially did not publicly establish that the UAV was Russian. The incident nevertheless occurred during a large Russian aerial campaign against Ukraine and amid repeated Russian-associated UAV incursions into NATO territory. It was also the second occasion in 2026 on which NATO aircraft shot down a drone inside Latvian airspace. Because Russian attribution was not conclusively established in the initial reporting, I recommend marking this “suspected Russian / attribution pending” rather than confirmed Russian.
